A sore throat that stops you swallowing, talking or sleeping is miserable. Tonsillitis, glandular fever lookalikes, and simple viral throats all walk through the same door. The job is to examine you, rule out the dangerous causes, and treat what we find.

When to book
- Pain on swallowing that is not settling

What happens in the appointment
- The GP looks at your throat, glands and ears, and checks how unwell you actually are.
- They use clinical scoring, not a guess, to decide about antibiotics.
- Pain relief advice is as important as any prescription.
- If this looks like a collection of pus or something that needs hospital, we send you there.
Clinic, online, or at home
A mild sore throat can start online. Difficulty swallowing, a muffled voice, or a very unwell child should be seen in clinic the same day. We do not examine tonsils properly on a phone camera.
After you leave
Rest, fluids, and the pain plan you were given. If swallowing gets worse, breathing changes, or you cannot drink, that is urgent NHS care, not a second private slot.

Can I get a sick note for tonsillitis?
Yes, if the GP agrees you are not fit for work. Fit notes are issued after a consultation, not from a form on its own.
