When to book
- A cough lasting more than a week, or getting worse
- Cough with fever, sputum, wheeze or breathlessness

What happens in the appointment
- The GP listens to the story: smoking, asthma, how long, what you have already taken.
- They examine your chest, oxygen if needed, and look for red flags.
- You leave with a plan: self-care, an inhaler, a steroid, antibiotics if justified, or a chest X-ray via Friends Medical Service.
- If you are too unwell to sit in clinic, we talk about a home visit or NHS urgent care.
Clinic, online, or at home
A simple dry cough can start with an online GP. A productive cough, wheeze, fever or known lung disease is better in clinic so we can listen to your chest. Frail patients who cannot travel should ask for a GP home visit or urgent medical care at home.
After you leave
Most coughs settle. If you worsen, become breathless at rest, or you are no better after the agreed window, come back or use 111. We work alongside your NHS GP and will not take over your asthma or COPD reviews unless you ask us to help between NHS appointments.
FAQs
Will I get antibiotics for a cough?
Only if the GP thinks there is a bacterial infection, or you are at higher risk. Most coughs are viral. We will explain the difference rather than defaulting to a prescription.
Can you listen to my chest on a video call?
Not properly. If a chest examination matters, book clinic or a home visit.
