Private GP for earache and ear infections

Ear pain in a child at 7pm, or a blocked ear that will not clear after a cold, is a classic private GP booking. We look in the ear, decide if this is infection, wax, or something else, and treat it accordingly.

When to book

  • Ear pain, especially with fever
  • Discharge from the ear
  • Hearing that has dropped after a cold
  • A child who is pulling at an ear and not themselves
  • Pain after swimming or with eczema in the ear canal

Call 999 or go to A&E if

  • A swollen, very painful bone behind the ear
  • A floppy ear, or the ear standing out with redness
  • Facial weakness
  • Severe dizziness with vomiting
  • A child who is floppy, not drinking, or has a non-blanching rash

For urgent advice that is not an emergency, call 111. Friends Medical GP is not an emergency service.

What happens in the appointment

  • The GP looks in both ears with an otoscope and checks the throat.
  • They explain whether this is middle ear infection, outer ear infection, wax, or referred pain.
  • Treatment might be drops, pain relief, antibiotics, or simply time.
  • If the drum cannot be seen, they will say so rather than pretend.

Clinic, online, or at home

Ear problems need an otoscope. Online is a poor first choice unless you only need advice while you travel to clinic. Children are almost always better seen in person.

After you leave

Pain should ease. If it does not, or the pinna becomes red and sticking out, come back or use urgent NHS care. Hearing that stays down after an infection can be reviewed.
