Private GP for menopause and perimenopause

Hot flushes, wrecked sleep, a short fuse, and a period pattern that has gone off-script are enough reason to book a longer GP slot. You do not need to “wait until it is unbearable”. We can talk about HRT, non-hormonal options, and what needs a gynaecology opinion rather than a GP prescription.

When to book

  • Sleep, mood or hot flushes are taking over
  • Your periods have become chaotic in your 40s or 50s
  • You want a first conversation about HRT
  • You are already on HRT and it is not sitting right
  • Brain fog, joint pain or low mood that you think might be hormonal

Call 999 or go to A&E if

  • Heavy bleeding that soaks through protection hourly
  • Bleeding after menopause (12 months without a period)
  • A breast lump, or new nipple change
  • Severe pelvic pain with collapse
  • Chest pain or breathlessness (call 999 if this might be a clot or heart attack)

For urgent advice that is not an emergency, call 111. Friends Medical GP is not an emergency service.

What happens in the appointment

  • The GP takes a symptom and period history, including migraines, clots, migraines with aura, and family history.
  • They examine only if it will change the plan.
  • HRT is discussed as a choice with risks and benefits, not a sales pitch.
  • Blood tests are not always required. If they are, we will say why and where to do them.

Clinic, online, or at home

A first menopause conversation can start online. Bleeding after menopause, a breast lump, or complex HRT (migraine with aura, previous clot) is better in clinic. Sexual health and coils sit with Friends Medical Service.

After you leave

Give any new treatment a fair window, then review. We can write to your NHS GP. We do not take over your NHS smears or breast screening.

FAQs

Can you start HRT in a private GP appointment?

Often yes, if it is appropriate after a proper history. Some cases need a specialist. We will not start treatment against a clear contraindication.
