Private GP for anxiety, stress and low mood

Anxiety, stress and low mood are among the commonest reasons people pay for a longer GP appointment. You get a quiet room, more than ten minutes, and a doctor who can issue a fit note, review medication, or write to your NHS GP. This is not a crisis service and it is not a replacement for talking therapies.

When to book

  • Sleep, work or relationships are falling apart because of stress or anxiety
  • You need a fit note and a proper conversation, not a two-line form
  • You want a medication review for an antidepressant you already take
  • Panic attacks have started and you want them named and planned for
  • You are supporting a parent whose mood has dropped after hospital

Call 999 or go to A&E if

  • You have a plan to end your life, or you have already hurt yourself
  • You are seeing or hearing things that are not there and feel unsafe
  • Someone else is at immediate risk
  • You cannot keep yourself safe tonight

For urgent advice that is not an emergency, call 111. Friends Medical GP is not an emergency service.

What happens in the appointment

  • The GP lets you talk, then asks the safety questions that matter.
  • They look at sleep, alcohol, physical causes, and what support you already have.
  • A fit note, a medication change, a letter, or signposting to NHS talking therapies may follow.
  • If this is a crisis, we stop the appointment model and send you to 999, 111 or Samaritans 116 123.

Clinic, online, or at home

Either can work if you feel safe. If you are in crisis, do not book a private slot. Call 999, 111, or Samaritans on 116 123. A home visit is for when travel is the barrier, not for an emergency mental health presentation.

After you leave

Keep your NHS GP in the loop. We can write to them with your consent. Private GP care does not replace CMHT, crisis teams or A&E. If you leave with a fit note, we will be clear about the review date.

FAQs

Can a private GP issue a sick note for stress?

Yes, after a consultation, if they agree you are not fit for work or need adjusted duties. It is a clinical decision, not an admin product.

Do you provide counselling?

We can start the conversation and signpost. Structured therapy is NHS Talking Therapies or a private therapist. We do not pretend a 30-minute GP slot is psychotherapy.
